However, it’s important to know how becoming an Uber driver can impact your insurance – including the price of coverage. 

Do I need special insurance coverage if I am an Uber driver in Ontario?

Yes. As of September 1, 2020, Uber provides insurance via Economical Insurance in Ontario. This commercial insurance only covers drivers while providing an Uber rideshare service. 

Drivers are required to have their own personal/ pleasure use car insurance for using their car outside of the Uber rideshare service. All Canadian drivers must have third-party liability coverage by law.

What insurance do you need for Uber driving?

All Uber drivers need to maintain automobile liability insurance on the vehicles they operate while driving for Uber. 

Uber drivers must have equal to or greater than the minimum requirements for coverage in the province they are working and driving in. 

What does Uber’s insurance cover in Ontario?

Uber’s insurance policies cover driver liability and bodily injury for the driver and their riders while in an Uber. This includes: 

  • $2 million of liability coverage
  • $2 million of uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage
  • Contingent collision and comprehensive coverage

Do I have insurance coverage between Uber trips?

Uber provides commercial auto insurance to Uber drivers during the time that you are available through the Uber app but have not yet accepted a trip. 

However, the driver remains responsible for their auto insurance when using their vehicle for personal use.

Do I need to tell my insurance provider if I drive for Uber?

Yes, you must tell your insurance provider that you drive for Uber. 

Section 1.8. 1 of the Ontario Personal Automobile Policy Act includes a clause saying that your policy is not valid if you use your vehicle for hire.

Is it harder to get insurance if I drive for Uber?

It is important to note that driving for Uber will affect your car insurance. This is because you’ll likely be driving more and therefore are more likely to file a claim. 

Will driving for Uber increase my insurance premiums?

In some cases yes, but not in all cases. After you discuss the matter with your insurance provider, you will get an indication of what your insurance rate changes may be.
